Summary

Legislation enacted in 1799 (amended in 1801) established a system of assessing and taxing real and personal property and required tax commissioners or (beginning in 1801) county supervisors to submit to the State Comptroller a copy of the county's tax rolls and a list of unpaid taxes. This series consists of town and city tax assessment rolls (excluding New York City) prepared by county treasurers and filed with the State Comptroller's Office.

This series from the Comptroller's Office consists of receipts, currency exchange ledgers, accounts of bills of credit, and cancelled lists of bundles of Continental money regarding the emission of currency by New York State. Also included is information on the amount of new emissions exchange for older notes and lists of bundles of old Continental notes.

A general order was required before an amendment could be voted on by the Committee of the Whole Convention. For each amendment, the volume provides: introducer; introductory number; print number; date referred to the Committee of the Whole; General order number; date sent for Third Reading; Third Reading number; and remarks (e.g., date reported, date sent to committee for revisions, date recommitted).

The Commission on Local Government Efficiency and Competitiveness was charged with studying the structure and operations of New York local government; reducing costs and improving the effectiveness of local government operations; and reforming election laws and procedures. The commission issued its final report, entitled "21st Century Local Government," in April 2008. These records consist of commission hearing and meeting files from 2007-2008, and transcripts of a State Assembly hearing on the commission's recommendations in 2008.

This series contains schedules of state-owned taxable lots within the Adirondack Forest Preserve and the Catskill Forest Preserve. Tax figures include school, highway, and special district taxes, and taxes rejected because of erroneous assessments. Individual lots are usually listed under the name of the patent or tract of which they are a part. Entries include lot number, location, acreage, assessed valuation, and tax amount. Entries also often include remarks such as "lumbered," "second growth," "burned," etc.).

The recognizance roll is a record of the undertaking of bail, made before a justice of the Supreme Court of Judicature. The roll contains the same information as is found in the plaintiff's declaration, followed by a statement of the obligation of the bail. The recognizance roll was the formal record upon which a plaintiff could bring an action against the defendant's bail.
