Administrative History
A law of 1780 (Ch. 69) appointed and empowered state agents to secure supplies for which the inhabitants of various localities had been assessed. In return for the supplies, the agent was to issue a certificate, noting the amount of goods supplied and their cost, the certificate to bear 6% interest. The agent was required to make an account of money received to the auditor general every six months, and he was entitled to compensation on money spent in carrying out his duties.
Scope and Content Note
This volume contains a list of certificates served by Deputy State Agent William Brown for the purchase of supplies for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The list shows the certificate number, dates, names, amount of the certificate, date paid, and the amount with interest. There is also an account of Brown's expenses and receipts. The volume also contains a listing of the supplies furnished to the army in Brown's district. The list includes the date; from whom the supplies were purchased; to whom they were delivered; and the type and amount supplied.
