Information includes property lines and owners; previous canal alignments; locations of ditches, washes, and state land; condition of land; land cultivation and use; natural bodies of water; roads, highways, and railroad platforms and tracks; businesses; and dwellings.

- This series consists of daily and weekly reports and logs documenting the operation of Barge Canal Lock No.22 (Sylvan Beach). Daily reports contain detailed information on the number of daily lockages including time, direction of lockage, name or number of tugboat, and registration number. Weekly reports summarize the number of lockages, number of freight and pleasure crafts, and water elevations. Station logs include daily temperatures and generator usage while the daily logs note events that occurred at the lock.

- This series consists of 64 charts and maps of the Erie Canal from Waterford to Buffalo, and of the Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca canals. They were seemingly prepared by the Department of Public Works to aid ships or boats in navigating canal waterways. Navigation charts are mixed with survey maps perhaps to aid production of charts for additional uncharted canal areas.

- The land appropriation files contain comprehensive legal documentation of the process by which the state acquired lands for the Barge Canal system (pursuant to Laws of 1909, Chapter 391, as amended), and of the state's title to those lands. The files document not only the transfer of legal title to the state (i.e. the deed), but also the title and lien history of the property, the negotiations with the landowner, and the review and approval by control agencies - Offices of the State Comptroller and Attorney General. All of this documentation is important for confirming that due process was observed and that the owner was justly, fairly compensated for the property taken by the state. In addition, the records thoroughly document an important government function, the appropriation of private property for a public purpose, in this case for the Barge Canal.

- These records document the Canal Board's responsibilities for hearing damage claims and appeals, directing special repairs, administering disputed contracts, and other canal-related administrative matters. The series also contains appeals from decisions of the Board of Appraisers, Canal Appraisers, and Board of Claims. The Canal Board's decision regarding these appeals was considered final. The series consists mostly of filed petitions and appeals to the Board along with minutes of hearings, testimony, correspondence, and other accompanying documentation.
