Scope and Content Note
This series consists of three ledgers maintained by the toll collector (Clinton Richards) at Boonville on the Black River Canal from October 15, 1886 through September 30, 1889. The ledgers contain the following information: date, number of clearances for the year, name of boat, place of hailing, where loaded, destination, master's name, description of cargo, quantity, and miles traveled. The ledgers also contain monthly and yearly totals of the number of miles by boats cleared through Boonville (e.g. 151,888 miles for 1885).
Custodial History
The provenance of these ledgers is unclear. They may have been part of a large transfer of canal-related records acquired in 1983 from the Department of Transportation that contained series B0249-83, Accounts of property first cleared and left at Boonville on the Black River Canal. However, it is also possible that they may have been included in the 1985 transfer of a large body of canal-related material stored by the Department of Transportation at the old Canal Museum formerly located in Syracuse.
