- The series primarily consists of reproductions of blueprint maps showing the right of way of railroads that owned real property in New York State. Generally, the maps depict not only the meets and bounds of the railroad right of way, but also public and private roads, bridges, and sewer lines that cross the right of way. In addition, the maps show town, village and county boundary lines, and often show adjacent structures and names of adjacent property owners.

Some maps show all Federal-Aid highways systems; older maps show only primary, secondary, and urban routes.

- The War Transportation Committee was responsible for ensuring that bus routes started during the war did not overlap with existing routes and waste automotive resources. Other transactions documented in this series include state surplus real property; gold, silver, mineral, and fossil deposits on state lands; and leases and transfers of unappropriated lands to the federal government and cessions of jurisdiction to the United States. - This series consists of memorandums, correspondence, maps, copies of deeds, newspaper clippings, publications, reports and cassette tapes generated as a consequence of an occupation of state-owned land at Moss Lake (Herkimer County) by a dissident group of Mohawk Indians who rejected the 1797 treaty by which the state acquired title. The Mohawks established a community they called Ganienkeh on the occupied land. Subsequent negotiation, supervised by the Secretary of State, led to the withdrawal of the Indians from Moss Lake and the move of Ganienkeh to two parcels of land in Clinton County.

- The series consists of sections of an undated printed colored U.S. Geological Survey topographic map of New York State, annotated to locate the areas covered by Barge Canal contracts. Each of the three canal divisions and the separate canals in each division were divided into residencies, with work in each residency done under the direction of a resident engineer or an assistant engineer in charge. Residency and contract numbers, and names of contractors are included.

Summary
- In March 1940 the Department of Public Works began a two-part Statewide Highway Planning Survey comprised of a Traffic Study and a Road Inventory. Public highway maps for each county were produced as part of the Road Inventory to facilitate the study of highway planning problems. This volume of printed maps was produced from data collected during this survey from 1940-1949. The volume contains maps for all counties except the five counties in New York City.

- This series contains survey descriptions and a map of a land grant for which the New York Central Railroad Company applied. The map was prepared to accompany the application for the grant of land under water of the Hudson River. - The Holland Land Company was an association of Dutch banks and other investors speculating in American land during the late 1700s. The company purchased over five million acres in central and western New York and Pennsylvania. This series consists of maps including purchaser's name; acreage and boundaries of each purchase and correspondence. One volume also contains an 1804 map of Holland Land Company land in New York State; another contains miscellaneous correspondence concerning land contracts.

- At one time the Department of Transportation possessed very sophisticated cartographic equipment and techniques, which were utilized by state agencies to create maps not directly related to transportation functions.
