Summary
- These minutes were compiled by the board secretary. An entry for each meeting begins with the date and a list of the members present, followed by a summary of the proceedings. Included are verbatim transcripts or copies of resolutions and reports considered by the board. Much of the business conducted by the board was based on information contained in reports submitted by board committees and by the superintendent and other institution officials.

- This series consists of transcripts of one inmate's incoming correspondence. Since the institution's superintendent held the originals; it is unlikely that the inmate received the letters. The letters which discuss his and other youths' activities may have been used to help make a parole decision and/or to monitor the inmate's associations once on parole. Subjects include crimes committed or planned and/or arrests of and legal proceedings against youths; parties; drinking; sexual encounters and the inmate's chances of being released.

Minutes after November 1, 1898 consist mostly of lists, providing inmate's name; action taken regarding the inmate; parole date and sometimes the reasons for actions taken.

- All visitors to the institution were required to sign in. These volumes list the name, city, state or country of each visitor. Visitors included legislators, jurors, students, teachers, professors, and members of the state legislature. Most visitors were from the New York City area; others included 25 other states, Washington D.C., Latin America, the West Indies, Canada, Europe, India, China, and Japan.

Also included are typescripts of some Board of Classification meeting minutes relating to the creation of four school divisions and subsequent inmate assignments. Records are restricted.
