Scope and Content Note
This is a partial record of male inmates still at the institution who had been admitted between June 30, 1869 and September 30, 1873. The report of the superintendent in the institution's annual reports included statistical data such as total number of inmates, number from each county, and causes of commitment. The superintendent may have intended these records to help him in compiling such information. However the record is incomplete, as it lists only 298 male inmates, while the 1874 Annual Report (published 1875) gives the total (as of January 1, 1894) as 373 male inmates.
The list provides: inmate number; name; a consecutive order number assigned to each inmate as he was listed (the first inmate listed was "1", the second inmate listed was "2", etc.); county of residence; admisson date; sex (all are male); age; county or other place of birth; if orphan, or half-orphan, or parents living; physical conditon; mental condition; cause of commitment; and remarks, usually concerning inmate's parents or stepparents.
