Canal engineer's field notes for state canals

Summary

This series consists of field notes from surveys made for the Canal Commissioners (Revised Statutes 1827), which directed that the Commissioners have maps and field notes made for all canals constructed by the state. Field notes in this series were submitted by the Canal Commissioners to the Canal Board for approval, and upon approval were certified by the commissioners and filed in the Comptroller's Office. The Erie, Chenango, Chemung, Crooked Lake, Cayuga and Seneca, and Oswego canals are covered.

This series consists of two bound volumes of "appraisal sheets" used by the Senate Committee on Civil Service in its 1915 investigation of the state civil service system. These pre-printed forms bear the title "Preliminary Report: Comparative Appraisals" and contain side-by-side columns for comparison of existing position/salary schedules with classifications of work done according to standard specifications. Forms are arranged by department or other major administrative division.

This series consists of records resulting from a 1974 class action suit filed against state officials or their estate by inmate survivors of the 1971 Attica uprising. The records were created by private counsel hired by the state to defend state officials. Types of records include trial transcripts; complaints; reports of other investigations; interviews; testimonies; depositions; summaries; pleadings; briefs; photographs; and attorney work notes. Records are partially restricted.

These photographic images were used as public relations vehicles for New York's governors. The photographs helped to publicize their official, and occasionally unofficial, activities. Most of the images reveal the routine activities that the governors' photographers were assigned to photograph. Records tend to be arranged by gubernatorial administration for the following governors: Thomas E. Dewey, W. Averell Harriman, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Malcolm Wilson, Hugh L. Carey, Mario M. Cuomo, and Eliot Spitzer.

"Speech files" of Angela Paresi

Although labeled as "speech files" of Angela Paresi, chairman of the Workmen's Compensation Board from 1955-1961, the series contains no copies of speeches. The files actually consist of press releases, issued mainly by Governor Averell Harriman and the Department of Labor; scattered issues of newsletters of the State University of New York; and black and white photographic prints of Paresi, Robert Wagner, and members of the Workmen's Compensation Board. The association of these files with Paresi's speechmaking is unknown.

Canal Board testimony and brief in case of Black River claims heard by Canal Appraisers

These volumes contain testimony concerning claims against the state for damages caused by the rupture of the dam at the North Lake Reservoir on the Black River in winter, 1869. Testimony includes extensive hydrologic and engineering data and also provides considerable information about mills, bridges, and other property damaged by the flood.
