- This series contains affidavits, orders, briefs, search warrants, notes of trials, correspondence, and other records produced or collected by the Joint Legislative Committee to Investigate Seditious Activities, known as the "Lusk Committee," for its chairman Clayton R. Lusk. The records pertain to charges brought against the many individuals and organizations by the Committee. The majority relate to the Rand School, the Communist Party of America, and the Russian Soviet Bureau.

- County clerks were required by law to submit copies of reports received from town school commissioners to the secretary of state. Town school commissioners' reports provide the number of common school districts wholly and partially in the town; funding received from the county treasurer and town collector; and titles of textbooks used. Common school district information includes district number; length of time that any school was kept; length of time that school was kept by an approved teacher; enrollment during previous year; number of children aged five to fifteen residing in school district; and funding received.

- This series consists of summary cards for inmates at various state correctional facilities. This series is not comprehensive. Cards between the 1940s and 1980s are more numerous than cards between the 1890s and 1930s. Cards typically indicate the inmate name, various identification numbers, date of birth, race, crime(s) of which the inmate was convicted, facility(ies) at which the inmate was incarcerated, parole eligibility date, date of actual parole, date of discharge, and date of maximum expiration of sentence.

The series contains files on completed centralizations as well as proposed centralization plans that were rejected by the Commissioner of Education or by school district voters. The records document hiring teachers, constructing schools, establishing new bus routes, and determining the ratio of state funding.

- This series consists of writs of appeal, in Dutch, from judgments made by the courts of New Amsterdam, Oostdurp (Westchester), Heemsteede, New Amstel, Wiltwyck (in the Esopus), Flushing (on Long Island), and Fort Orange. Writs of appeal were granted by the Council of the Colony of New York in response to petitions, usually submitted by one party in a civil action. The records in this series also include summonses and writs of mandamus.

The governor exercised final approval over these mandates.
