- This is a transcription of the original receipt book listing land grants issued by Gerrit Smith in 1846, when he made a gift of 3,000 deeds to African Americans and poor white people. The book lists the following information relating to these grants: county name; township; tract; lot; quarter of lot; acres; and remarks (i.e. names of grantees). This volume was apparently retained by the Comptroller due to his involvement in land grants and land taxing in New York State.

- This series consists of purchase certificates of land from the Oneida Indian Reservation. The certificates were returned to the Office of the State Comptroller when the sales were not completed due to non-payment. The certificates are signed by the Surveyor General as seller and include receipts for partial payments. Other information includes lot number, number of acres purchased, date of purchase, amount paid, amount due, subsequent payments and transferences of ownership, and date surrendered.

- This series contains an assortment of unrelated records that were apparently removed from institutional records for purposes of research or exhibit. Volumes include: an admissions book (July 1925-June 1926); a parole/elopement book (May-December 1917); a book of escapes (April 1953-August 1957); a clothing account check book (mostly blank) with receipts for the New York Asylum for Idiots (ca. 1862); and a hospital admission/discharge book (1928). It also contains an assortment of apparently unrelated material collected for historical or documentary significance.

- This series consists of registers listing auctioneers who posted bond and returned taxes to the State Comptroller. State law required auctioneers to file every three months "a just and true account" of all wares and goods sold at public auction so that the treasurer could determine what duties should be levied. The auctioneers are listed by county with each entry recording name, residence (city or town), date of execution of bond, and the dates of receipts of the quarterly returns.

- This series consists of maps, mostly of the Hudson River and New York Harbor and connecting rivers and bays, drawn by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to ensure the waterways remain navigable. Maps show: pier headlines; bulkhead lines; location of platforms, retaining walls, streets, bridges, buildings, and docks; and depth of the water at various points. Also included are maps showing state waterways, including a 1786 map of the New York-Pennsylvania border.

- The Holland Land Company was an association of Dutch banks and other investors speculating in American land during the late 1700s. The company purchased over five million acres in central and western New York and Pennsylvania. This series consists of a portfolio of deeds (conveyances of real property) for individual lots in the Holland Purchase. Deeds are signed duplicate originals, and contain maps of lots conveyed.

- A twelve-member legislative Commission on Extension of the Civil Service was created in 1939 to study the problems of extending civil service to local governments. The Commission's investigation resulted in the "Fite Law" which provided for the administration of civil service law and rules in all of New York's civil divisions. The Secretary's files document the development of legislation on local civil service administration and the attitude of local officials towards civil service extension and information on local public employment.
