Scope and Content Note
This series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings, printed materials (including brochures, booklets and newsletters), published and unpublished reports, press releases, speeches, legislative and grant proposals, hearing testimony, reading files, mail logs and annual reports of various commissions and committees.
These records make up the subject files of Dr. Edward D. Coates, who served as First Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Health. The files deal with such health related issues as abortion, family planning, hazardous waste, hospital and nursing home construction, legionnaire's disease, lead poisoning, Medicaid and Medicare, nuclear radiation, nutrition and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). They also reflect the first deputy commissioner's relationship with various organizations in the health care field such as the Health Planning Commission, the New York City Department of Health, the Public Health Council and the State Hospital Review and Planning Council.
B1214-84: This accretion consists of the subject files of Mary Ann Holohean, who served as Deputy Commissioner of Operations for the Department of Health. They also reflect the deputy commissioner's relationship with various health care organizations such as the Health Planning Commission, Home Care Association, the Public Health Association and the State Hospital Review and Planning Council.
B1214-86: This accretion consists of the subject files of Deputy Commissioner of Operations Mary Ann Holohean (appointed March 1981) and Lorna McBarnette (appointed September 1983). Shortly after McBarnette's appointment, the title of the position was changed to Executive Deputy Commissioner. The files deal with such health related issues as abortion, child abuse, family planning, nuclear radiation and toxic wastes. They also reflect the executive deputy commissioner's relationship with such health care organizations as the Center for Environmental Health, the Health Planning Commission and the Public Health Council.
