The larger of the two maps depicts the entire 1500 acre farm including clearings, woods, creeks, town lines, railroads, and existing Shaker buildings. The smaller map shows a 587 acre section of the property including existing Shaker buildings.

- The series consists of minutes of meetings of the "Executive Committee" of the New York State Asylum for Idiots, held roughly once a month between 1855 and 1891. Meetings are described as "informal" in the minutes, and the bulk of entries list bills audited. Lists show vendor/company and amount owed. Sometimes those conducting the audit are named. Damage to opening pages of the volume obscures information on the first few reported meetings.

- An 1851 law provided for the state to undertake the care and teaching of "idiots" (the contemporary term for people with certain developmental disabilities). The New York State Asylum for Idiots, with a capacity for 100 residents, was completed on August 10, 1855. The series consists of 19th century watercolor renderings and pencil and ink drawings of the original building. The asylum was the first public facility in the nation for the care and treatment of persons with mental retardation.
