Summary
- This series consists of aerial photograph negatives and prints and corresponding photographic indexes depicting the state's roads and highway system. The aerial photography which forms the basis for the index was contracted by the Department of Public Works and its successor, the Department of Transportation, to document the statewide infrastructure for planning and construction purposes. A relatively small number of images depict state institutions, such as state university campuses, and other geographic features.

Summary
- This series consists of photographic negatives and positive prints of low-altitude, oblique aerial views of a variety of New York State sites, produced by the New York office of Fairchild Aerial Surveys (a commercial firm) during the years 1946-1949, 1951, and 1957. The reason the photography was done is not known, but the firm's work was used to produce maps for the U.S. Geological Survey, among others. Images depict locations statewide, with the New York City metropolitan area predominating.

- These aerial photographs of State University of New York (SUNY) college and university campuses provided the Project Control and Initiation Unit with visual information necessary for capital plans and surveying. Taken at approximately five year intervals between 1962-1981, the photos are of individual campuses and the SUNY Central Administration Building in Albany. In addition, a series of aperture cards depicting construction drawings and schematics of the buildings and grounds is available for the majority of school sites.

New York State Department of Public Works Highway Planning Aerial Photographs of Cities and Villages

- Approximately 1000 aerial photographs depict cities and villages in downstate counties from Dutchess County southward, including Long Island. There are also a a few from Ontario County. These may have been taken as part of a reclassification study initiated in 1963 to determine which highways should be under state, county, or local jurisdiction and to prepare a new State Highway System Map for highway route selection or design purposes.

- This series documents one of several regional transportation studies undertaken by New York State in compliance with the U.S. Federal Aid Highways Act of 1962. The series consists of 18" x 18" aerial photographs (scale 1:48,000) of Albany, Schenectady, Troy, and the Upper Hudson region taken in April and May, 1963. Roads, bodies of water, plots of land, buildings, and trees are visible on these photographs.

- 26,000 aerial photographs of state-owned forest lands including. of the Adirondack, Catskill , Allegany , and Palisades parks, and Southern Tier counties. Used to determine boundaries of forest lands and forest types for the appraisal of taxable forest lands, the. ordinary film depicts foliage uniformly in gray. Black and white infrared photos depict foliage in varying shades to identify softwood, hardwood, softwood, and mixed timber stands, and locate trees that have damage from acid precipitation or insect or fungal infestation

- These aerial photographs were taken to produce overlay maps for the LUNR and LRIS projects as part of a natural resource inventory in New York State. The base maps for the overlays were United States Geological Survey/New York State Department of Transportation quadrangle maps. The photographs document general and specific use of land for analysis by government and private planning, development, and conservation agencies. Discernible features include agricultural land, forest land, waterways, residential developments, commercial/industrial developments, buildings, and roads.

- The bulk of this series consists of area and point data overlay maps produced for land use analysis and planning by government and private planning, development, and conservation agencies. Area data overlays provide outlines of major land use categories including agricultural; commercial/industrial land; mining; forest land; outdoor recreation area; residential area; transportation land use; water resources; and non-productive land. Point data overlays include rural residences, mobile homes, outdoor recreation facilities, schools, and solid waste disposal sites.
