Summary
- Approximately 1000 aerial photographs depict cities and villages in downstate counties from Dutchess County southward, including Long Island. There are also a a few from Ontario County. These may have been taken as part of a reclassification study initiated in 1963 to determine which highways should be under state, county, or local jurisdiction and to prepare a new State Highway System Map for highway route selection or design purposes.

Scope and Content Note
These are 10" x 10" aerial photographs of cities and villages in downstate counties (from Dutchess County southward), except for a few photographs of Geneva, Ontario County.
These may have been taken as part of a reclassification study initiated in 1963 to determine which highways should be under state, county, or local jurisdiction and to prepare a new State Highway System Map based on the findings. The Department of Public Works let contracts with private firms for photogrammatic maps produced from aerial surveys for highway route selection or design purposes. There are from 1 to 19 photographs for each location; some have the date taken written on them.
