- This series contains forms submitted to the State Board of Charities by poorhouse officials from most counties in the state. Forms provide information regarding children transferred from poorhouses to orphanages, apprenticeships, or families willing to act as guardians. "General Inquiry" forms provide aggregate statistics for each institution. "Personal Inquiry" forms record data for each child placed outside an institution: name; sex; age; if native or foreign born; if orphan; physical health, occupation, and status in current living situation.

The testimony covers routine operations of the institution, conduct and efficiency of the staff, and treatment and abuse of inmates. Included is information on the case of alleged abuse of almshouse hospital patients by nurse, William Wilmot.

- Chapter 140 of the laws of 1875 required public almshouses and poorhouses in New York State to keep records on individual inmates and to send copies of these records to the State Board of Charities each month. Each annual report contains financial information on the value of real and personal property, investments, indebtedness, receipts, expenditures, and cash on hand and statistical information on patients treated, persons vaccinated, prescriptions made, home visits, and home treatments.

- This series consists of transmittal letters, some containing summary reporting data on admissions and discharges, and a few notices of discharge of individual inmates. The records were sent by superintendents of various county almshouses. Institutions represented include the New York City Farm Colony; Richmond County Almshouse; Rockland County Almshouse; and the Home for the Aged and Infirm of Brooklyn Division.
