- This series contains field notes of geological investigations, organized into three groupings according to the particular survey to which they pertained: the Geological and Natural History Survey, ca. 1832-1845; the Geological Survey, 1885-1939; and the Capitol District Ground Water Survey, 1938. The records include notes on field work conducted; reports on mineral resources and industries in New York State; reports on specific mines, quarries, wells, and mineral processing plants in New York State; and reports and notes on various geological formations.

- This series consists of activity reports submitted by producers of minerals to the state geologist detailing their activities during the year. They were used to compile annual statistics on mineral production in the State and published periodically in State Museum bulletins. Through 1957 the reports note firm or proprietor's name; locations of office and field operations; and quantity and value of the mineral produced. Also included are lists of mineral producers, by mineral and reports for producers of gravel and sand.

- The memorial album contains diplomas, honorary degrees, and certificates of election to scientific and natural history societies awarded to James Hall former director of in the State Museum. Included are the Governor's proclamation designating Hall as State Geologist and Paleontologist indefinitely (1893) and a resolution of the State Assembly absolving Hall of all charges against his integrity (1896).
