Administrative History
Beginning in 1926 the state geologist began collecting mineral production data in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau o fMines on forms supplied by the Bureau. In addition to detailed information on the quantity and value of varieties of each mineral produced, many of those forms include questions about the company's mining or manufacturing processes, level of activity compared with former years, conditions affecting output, and disposition of quarries or mines no longer owned by the company.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of reports submitted by each producer of minerals to the state geologist detailing their activities during the year. These reports were used by the state geologist to compile annual statistics on mineral production in the State. The results of this compilation were published periodically in State Museum bulletins under the title, "The Mining and Quarrying Industry of New York State" beginning in 1904. Through 1925 the reports consist of 3 1/4" x 8 1/2" pink cards on which are recorded: firm or proprietor's name; locations of office and field operations; and quantity and value of the mineral produced. Separate cards were used for each mineral, many of which contain a breakdown by mineral variety (e.g. production of "clay materials" is broken down into common brick, front brick, vitrified paving brick, drain tile, ornamental terra cotta, etc.) Data on approximately 30-35 minerals was collected each year.
B0574-87,1961-1968: The files for 1963 and 1968 are incomplete. In addition, this accretion includes lists of mineral producers, by mineral, for a 1961 directory of producers. These lists are annotated through 1968.
B0574-82, 1958: These are reports for producers of gravel and sand only.
