These reports by school principals contain summary information on the number of students examined in each subject and the number of passing grades. Included is a list of students taking the examination giving each one's name, age, address, and scores in each subject. Only fragmentary reports exist.

The first Regents examinations were developed for and distributed by the Regents and administered by schools in 1865, initially intended for all students seeking admission to academies and high schools. By the following decade, the exams had become a standard for high school graduation and admission to college. The specific tests developed as Regents examinations varied. During the early to mid 20th century, exams were developed for the typical academic subjects along with various vocational and specialized subjects.
