Administrative History
The Regents were required to establish examinations and academic departments of union schools in 1877. Examination papers were first rated in the schools where the examinations were held and those scoring at least 75% were forwarded with the reports comprising this series to the High School Department (Examination Department until 1898) of the University of the State of New York. There the examination papers were reviewed and the principal's reports apparently were annotated to reflect the results of this review.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of bound reports submitted to the High School Department by principals after the administration of the Regents academic examinations.
Each report contains a summary providing the number of students examined in each subject and the number of passing grades claimed and allowed. Each report also contains a list providing the following information about each student who took the examination: name, age, address, scores in each subject tested, and occasionally a Regents Office Number.
