This single volume contains employment appointment history, educational background information, and prior work experience of employees involved in construction and maintenance of the Western Division of the Erie Canal. Entries are included for engineers, rodmen; chainmen; levelers; and laborers. Data provided includes employee date of birth; age at time of first appointment; date of each appointment, along with job title and daily wage rate; leaves of absence (generally separation dates, including reason for separation); and an abstract of the employee's education and work experience.

State Engineer and Surveyor weekly employee reports

These reports were compiled by the office of the Western Division Engineer (Rochester) in accordance with Chapter 354 of the Laws of 1883, which required state government offices to keep "proper comparative records of the efficiency, punctuality, attention and general good conduct" of their employees. Each employee is rated on a 1-5 scale, with "5" being the highest, according to these measures of conduct. A few reports also include narrative comments.
