The series also includes accounts for Western District lands, which list purchaser's and forfeiter's names; lands purchased; date and amount of sale; and amounts and means of payments made by the purchaser.

This series contains documents relating to civil litigation in the Supreme Court of Judicature, filed by the court clerk whose office was in New York City, or in other locations between the years 1778-1783. Most of the documents are pleadings by plaintiffs and defendants, bonds, draft rules, and affidavits. Criminal case documents include indictments, informations, etc., almost entirely for the period 1753-1795.

Minutes of Commissioners to Extinguish Claims Against Lands Sold by the State

Commissioners of the Land Office examined and settled claims against loyalists' lands confiscated and sold by the commissioners of forfeitures. Most claims were based on erroneous sales of land not subject to forfeiture, or the dower rights of widows of loyalists. These minutes locate and describe the bounds of the property in question; recite the substance of the claim; and state the commissioners' decision and award.

Despite the establishment of the State Court of Probates in 1778 and the Surrogate's Court system in 1787, citizens continued to petition the State Legislature for assistance in settling estates of deceased persons. This series contains petitions to the legislature from heirs to estates and estate executors or administrators. The petitions address a wide variety of probate matters, including settlement of debts owed by or to estates and contested dispositions of estates.
