- The series consists of a small quantity of correspondence, reports, rosters of commissioned officers, provision returns, special and general orders, reports, morning reports and related records concerning the Independent Corps, Light Infantry. The regiment, which was also known as the "Enfants Perdu" or "Lost Children," was initially mustered into federal service in 1862. The unit disbanded in 1864 when the enlisted men transferred to several regiments.

- This series consists of various types of printed forms, reports, incoming correspondence, lists of men who were mustered into the service of the United States government, and an assortment of printed material submitted by local officials to the Bureau of Military Statistics between 1863 and 1868. The records were initially compiled pursuant to Chapter 113, Laws of 1863 which required the Bureau of Military Statistics, in addition to other duties, to "collect and preserve...an account of the aid afforded by the several towns and counties of this state." In 1865 (Chapter 690), the Legislature further specified the type of information which the bureau was to collect.

- This series consists of printed material collected by the Bureau of Military Statistics dealing with a variety of topics, including procedures to collect bounty payments, soldiers' relief funds, presidential politics, the duties of inspectors of elections, materials relating to the State of New Jersey during the Civil War, and the thanksgiving proclamation issued by Governor Horatio Seymour in November 1863. These printed materials were most likely collected by the bureau while trying to collect anything related to the Civil War.

- This volume contains abstracts of vouchers pertaining to the support of the state's military at the outset of the Civil War. Each entry provides date, voucher number, description, and amount. The bulk of the series pertains to three million dollars appropriated to raise and equip 30,000 troops for federal service with vouchers for rations, bedding, eating utensils, uniforms, arms, equipment, and transportation costs. Other accounts relate to purchase of arms and equipment for the state's militia, for military hospital supplies, for quartering costs, and for personnel in the military bureaucracy.

Of particular concern was the inspection of armories, arsenals, and military storehouses; the inspection of military property issued to National Guard units; and the auditing of accounts. This letter book pertains to matters dealing with the state's National Guard rather than volunteer units raised during the Civil War.

Most of these documents deal with Company B of Regiment 2 of the Militia Volunteers. Contained within the series is one pre-war letter (1856) written from Joseph B. - This series consists of copies of incoming correspondence directed to Governor Edwin D. Morgan, originally found in Inspector General's administrative correspondence files. The Executive Chamber probably forwarded these copies to the Inspector General in order to keep him informed of current events or because they dealt with matters which required his attention. One of the Inspector General's major responsibilities was to attend to the organization of the militia, which is what the bulk of this correspondence is concerned with.
