Summary
The Washington's Birthday Celebration Commission was a temporary state commission established to cooperate with the federal government in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. The bulk of the series consists of reports of the state commission and a variety of pamphlets, magazine articles, illustrations, and newspaper clippings about George Washington. Also included are scores of letters to the state commission from citizens from around New York who were born on February 22nd.

This series contains correspondence, ephemera, reports, newspaper articles, questionnaires, and financial records of statewide observances related to the 150th anniversary of the American Revolution and Sullivan-Clinton Campaign of 1779. Other historical observances documented include the Albany Tercentenary; Battle of Plattsburgh Centennial; Battle of Sodus Point Memorial Dedication; Cooperstown Baseball Centennial; and Thaddeus Kosciuszko Memorial Dedication.

The original proclamations were filed with the Secretary of State in accordance with legislation of 1892 and 1951 requiring all documents issued under the great seal of New York State to be filed with the secretary. Usually ceremonial in nature, the proclamations recognize important events, issues, or personal achievements by proclaiming a day, week, or month in the subject's honor.
