An appellant in Supreme Court or the Court of Errors was required by legislation of 1829 to give bond. There are few bonds dating before 1823.

When the title to property failed from defect or lack of heirs, the land then reverted, or escheated, to the people of the state. The state then appointed temporary administrators, often local judges, to supervise the rental and maintenance of the property until possible heirs could be identified, or other disposition of the land.
