Summary
- This series contains correspondence detailing the Education Department's involvement with war-time programs related to educating citizens on defense matters. Under the auspices of the War Council, the department organized several programs including the Civilian Defense Training Program. A series of pamphlets produced with the Departments of Health, Labor, Mental Hygiene, and Social Welfare for the War Council to educate the general public are included, as are field reports from Education Department personnel who visited statewide war programs.

- This series consists almost entirely of case files of appeals to the chief state school administrative officer by persons contesting the official actions of local school officials, school district meetings, or county treasurers. Each case file contains documents that correspond to the various stages of the appeals process. The bulk of the nineteenth century files date from 1868-1899.

- This series contains teaching and study notes, reading lists, examination questions, outlines and drafts of papers, a few graded examinations, and some correspondence of James Sullivan prior to his appointment as State Historian in 1916. Courses include American, European, economic, constitutional, legal, and political history. Also included in this series is 1916 correspondence of State Historian James A. Holden concerning distribution of published "Proceedings at the Unveiling of a Memorial to Horace Greeley at Chappaqua, New York February 3, 1914."
