Work diary for Forestport operations and maintenance shop

This series consists of a journal of work activities kept by staff at Forestport, a workshop that operated and repaired reservoirs and feeder canals in the Adirondacks. This record of maintenance activities is particularly useful in understanding and interpreting the historic operations of the reservoirs and waterways. Sites at which work is recorded include the Black River; Nine Mile feeders; Hinckley and Sand Lake dams; Woodhull Lake; North Lake; Trenton Falls; and Boonville.

New York State Barge Canal System contract shop drawings

This series consists of approximately 1000 shop drawings, which were used in conjunction with individual Barge Canal contracts to produce detailed specifications. The maps are primarily on linen and contain a great level of detail; from these plans contractors and manufacturers were able to fulfill specific terms of contracts. Included are shop drawings for the components of bridges, locks, gates, dams, winch cars, and other canal mechanisms. Also included in this series are shop drawings for four maintenance contracts.

This series consists of original linen plans and drawings delineating maintenance contracts assigned for the New York State Barge Canal System. After the completion of the Barge Canal System in the mid-1920's, appropriations were authorized for the maintenance and operations of the system. McFarland-Johnson photo survey of canal structures

This series consists of color photoprints, slides, and negatives documenting all aspects of canal structures including dams, locks, gates, sluices, walls, and bridges. This statewide survey was conducted in 1988 by a private firm under contract to the Dept. of Transportation's Division of Waterways Maintenance.

Permits became inactive as authorized uses were outmoded or new permits were issued. Uses approved by permits include agriculture, beautification, boating docks, marinas, pipelines, railroads, spoil, recreation transmission lines, and water supplies.

Maps of lands permanently appropriated by the State of New York for the use of the Barge Canal

Summary
The Laws of 1903, Chapter 147 authorized the State Engineer to appropriate lands, structures, and waters for the use of the improved canals (Barge Canal). This series consists of the original linen and paper maps created and maintained by the State Engineer and Surveyor and its succeeding agencies. The bound volumes constitute a five-volume set of maps showing land appropriations made pursuant to Chapter 79 of the Laws of 1895.

This series consists of ledgers maintained by the toll collector at Boonville on the Black River Canal. The ledgers contain date; number of clearances for the year; name of boat; place of hailing; where loaded; destination; master's name; cargo description; quantity; miles traveled; and monthly and yearly totals of the number of miles by boats cleared through Boonville.

The series consists of nonactive registration applications and certificates of registry for vessels operating on the Barge Canal system, as well as documentation of vessels' trips on the canal. Applications provide information on each vessel, including vessel type, dimensions, history, and owners. The certificates provide a chronology of ownership. The Division of Waterways Maintenance was responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the canal system until 1992.
