- This series consists of agendas or "calendars" and background memoranda of the Civil Service Commission. Calendars contain a listing of items to be discussed by the Commission. Typically a calendar contains over one hundred items on topics such as jurisdictional classification, temporary and provisional appointments, leaves of absence, eligible list extensions, selective certification, examination appeals, waiver of requirements, and review of municipal civil service commission rule changes. Memorandums containing background information, recommendations and/or supporting documentation may be included with items.

Summary
- These conferences were held prior to the 1967 State Constitutional Convention to solicit suggestions for changes in the State Constitution's civil service provisions. This series consists of audio tapes, stenographer's notes, and typed transcripts of conferences held by the Civil Service Commission with agency heads, consultants, and representatives of the Civil Service Employees Association, Personnel Council, and the American Society for Public Administration. All transcripts and most tapes and notes are identified as to date of conference and organization represented.

- This series contains the Civil Service Commission's official meeting minutes signed by its secretary. The Commission was set up "to regulate and improve the Civil Service of the State," and these minutes document their work toward that end. There are entries for all Commission meetings except those between 1944 and 1947, when only verbatim minutes were kept. Pre-1899 minutes are handwritten while all others are typewritten.

- Any State employee disciplined by a penalty of demotion, dismissal, suspension without pay, or fine can appeal the determination to the Civil Service Commission or the courts. This series consists of case files of reports to the Commission usually accompanied by a hearing transcript. Reports contain a history of the appeal, charges, appellant's written answer to the charges, analysis of the record of appeal, facts of the case and conclusions determined by the Civil Service hearing officer, and his recommendations.

This series consists of four subseries, surviving fragments of larger series, which once existed from this period.
