This series consists of various types of printed forms, reports, incoming correspondence, lists of men who were mustered into the service of the United States government, and an assortment of printed material submitted by local officials to the Bureau of Military Statistics between 1863 and 1868. The records were initially compiled pursuant to Chapter 113, Laws of 1863 which required the Bureau of Military Statistics, in addition to other duties, to "collect and preserve...an account of the aid afforded by the several towns and counties of this state." In 1865 (Chapter 690), the Legislature further specified the type of information which the bureau was to collect.

Summary
This series consists of proclamations issued by governors of northern states and territories, with the exception of one received from Arkansas. The proclamations were compiled by the Bureau of Military Statistics and its successor, the Bureau of Military Record, between 1863 and 1866. Essentially, the proclamations are messages from the governor to the people prescribing a specific day (usually in November) on which prayers and thanksgiving should be offered and the reasons why.

Summary
This series consists of commissions utilized by northern states in commissioning general officers during the Civil War. The commissions are blank except for signatures of appropriate state officials (i.e., adjutant-general or governor) and the state seal. The commissions were collected by the Bureau of Military Statistics in 1865. The chief of the bureau, in his first annual report, announced that it would be the bureau's intention to seek for "every fact relating to the rebellion."

In 1863, the State Legislature mandated that the Bureau of Military Statistics collect and preserve an "authentic sketch of every person from this State who has volunteered into the service of the general government" since April 15, 1861.
