- This series indexes maps once maintained by the Region 2 Waterways Maintenance Office of the Department of Public Works. Maps and plans indexed included the first Erie Canal enlargement, the 1895 Improvement and the Erie Barge Canal, the Black River Canal, the Chenango Canal, the Northern and Southern Reservoirs, Oneida Lake, and the Old and New Oneida Lake Canals. Also included indexed is work on the Utica State Hospital and Marcy State Hospital.

- This series consists of approximately 1000 shop drawings, which were used in conjunction with individual Barge Canal contracts to produce detailed specifications. The maps are primarily on linen and contain a great level of detail; from these plans contractors and manufacturers were able to fulfill specific terms of contracts. Included are shop drawings for the components of bridges, locks, gates, dams, winch cars, and other canal mechanisms. Also included in this series are shop drawings for four maintenance contracts.

Summary
- This series consists of linen plans and drawings for contracts authorized by New York State and funded by the federal government. Under terms of a 1935 state-federal agreement, New York State was able to accept federal aid for improvements to the Barge Canal System without transferring the canals to the federal government. As contracts were completed, the federal government reimbursed the state. The project was known as the Hudson to Great Lakes Waterway and the contracts became popularly known as "U.S." contracts.

- This series consists of approximately 240 linen maps showing locations of channels, structures, appropriated lands, and terminals of the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga and Seneca Canals, as well as the location of old canals in relation to the Barge Canal System as improved under laws of 1903, 1909, and 1911. The improved canals would become the Barge Canal System. The maps contain information regarding individual structures and appropriated lands not found on other maps of canal lands.
