Included are records relating to the Baxstrom patient research study and the pre-Baxstrom research study in the 1970s, which examined individuals transferred from hospitals of the criminally insane under the Department of Correctional Services to the civil mental hospitals in the Department of Mental Hygiene.

Most of the records pertain to inmates in Bedford's Reformatory Division, although several pertain to inmates in the Prison Division. Inmate files include work release agreement; work release report; request for disbursement of funds; correspondence and memorandums relating to transportation, purchase of clothing, inability to work because of illness, etc.; and several black and white photographs of the inmate.

The registers cover the period from May 24, 1877 to December 27, 1950 and consecutive numbers from 1 to 51274. Registers covering the period from October 14, 1886 to December 4, 1891 and consecutive numbers 2399 to 4973 are missing. Registers provide consecutive number; name of incarcerated individual; date of admission; date of sentence; maximum sentence; crime; county of sentencing; court; judge; age; height; weight; complexion; eye color; hair color; state or country of nativity; nationality; temperate or intemperate; and religion.

- The series consists of daily reports describing punishments at Auburn Prison. Assistant keepers could punish those incarcerated at their discretion if they reported their actions in writing to the prison's agent or deputy keeper. The short narratives include date; name of assistant keeper; name of the punished; offense committed; location of offense; and punishment given. Occasionally, the reports also include a one-sentence description of significant events occurring at the prison such as fires, resignations of officials, and missing incarcerated persons.

In addition, volume six contains an overall inventory of an unknown ward detailing unused clothing and clothing ordered. The content varies between volumes, but generally provides information on what clothing was issued to an inmate, his/her name, number, date of admission, private clothing owned by the inmate, and ward number to which inmate was transferred.
