- These registers report summary information on incarcerated individuals committed to state correctional institutions and selected county penitentiaries each month. Information is handwritten in columns on preprinted pages which were later bound into volumes for each year. Monthly reports from each institution provide the following information: name of incarcerated individual; county where convicted; crime; court; judge; date of sentence; date received at prison; term; and remarks (such as previous prison terms).

- This series is a daily record of changes in the population of incarcerated individuals at the Elmira Reformatory from May 24, 1877 to September 30, 1883. For each day that a change occurs, the volume lists: date; name; consecutive number; and activity (received, transferred, discharged, paroled, pardoned, escaped, deceased, or returned).

- This series consists of statistical profiles of incarcerated individuals at the New York State Reformatory. Category statistics include type of offense; length of maximum and definite sentence; occupation; personal and physical characteristics; educational level; mental level; religion; color; ethnicity; past criminal and institutional history; and level of drunkenness. Other statistics relate to number of incarcerated individuals discharged; paroled; returned for parole violations; pardoned; escaped; transferred to other institutions or died while in prison.

Summary
- The series consists of brief memorandums from physicians to prison authorities usually recommending appropriate medical care or end of need for medical care for incarcerated patients that the physicians have examined. Many memorandums recommend that an incarcerated individual be mustered out of the military squad because of a medical problem. Memorandums include date, addressee, consecutive number, last name of the incarcerated individual, and physicians name and title. The name of physician is often omitted.

Summary
- This series consists primarily of microfilmed case records for approximately 3,000 incarcerated males, aged sixteen to twenty years old, processed through the Elmira Reception Center from 1945-1965. The case files represent a ten percent random stratified sample of all individuals processed through the facility and served as source documents for a study in recidivism made by the Department of Correction in 1967. The series also contains documentation of the Reception Center Research Project.

Entries include past criminal history; date of order confining them in the State Reformatory; age, nativity, and nationality; names of closest relatives; family history; personal history; physician's report at time of confinement and at time of departure; vocational assignment while confined; and criminal history following departure.

- This volume contains entries from February 1, 1923, to January 31, 1924. Reports are listed monthly on fines imposed on incarcerated individuals of an unidentified residential facility, probably Elmira Reformatory. Information is present for the following: consecutive number, name, class (1 or 2, probably refers to degree of infraction) and fines, and surname of officer reporting the offence. The volume only occasionally specifies nature of offences. Nature of fines or punishments is never specified.

- This series consists of the monthly reports sent to the governor from each prison indicating incarcerated individuals eligible for discharge by commutation. The reports from all prisons for each year were bound into volumes. Each monthly report from each prison provides the following information: name; county; crime; court; judge; date of sentence; date received at prison; term; commutation earned; date eligible for discharge; amount of time lost for rule violations; and occasional remarks recommending increase or decrease in commutation.

Summary
- Under the Elmira system, each incarcerated individual's release was determined by good behavior and the accumulation of marks for school achievement, labor productivity, and adherence to institutional rules. This series consists of volumes recording the "credits" and "debits" used in this marking system. Each page contains the record of a single incarcerated male and each person's record was maintained until they were paroled or had served their maximum sentence.
