Scope and Content Note
These volumes index enrolled decrees and transcribed enrolled decrees of the Court of Chancery (1st Circuit) filed by the court clerk. The indexes include adversarial cases, commenced by complaint, but non-adversarial cases commenced by petition. The three volumes index the Vice-Chancellor's enrolled decrees that were filed by the Clerk of the Court of Chancery (1st Circuit) in New York City. The volumes contain essentially the same kinds of data, but the third volume is the most complete.
Each entry in the three indexes states the last names of the complainant and defendant, and the year of the decree. Each of the volumes contains annotations of letter-number codes referring to original enrolled decrees in Series JN307 and JN312, and volume numbers referring to the "copied libers" ("C.L.") of transcribed enrolled decrees in Series JN306. The first and second index volumes are manuscript, and the annotations are incomplete. The third index volume is a typescript prepared in 1923 for the Commissioners of Records for the City and County of New York. It is the preferred index because it contains complete references to filed and transcribed enrolled decrees of the Court of Chancery (1st Circuit), in their present organization, up to the date the index was compiled. The second and third volumes include decrees issued by the Supreme Court (New York County) in Vice-Chancery cases commenced before the Court of Chancery was abolished effective July 1, 1847.
Alternate Formats Available
The third volume, a typewritten index produced in 1923, was microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah in 1977 at the New York County Clerk's Office. The GSU microfilm has been digitized and the images can be viewed online at FamilySearch Affiliate Libraries (including the New York State Archives and the New York State Library). The FamilySearch microfilm and digital images are cataloged under the author "New York County (New York) County Clerk,: with the title "Index to Vice Chancery Decrees, vol. 2, 1823-1854," microfilm reel number 1017477 (item 2).
