Scope and Content Note
This series documents the development and activities of State University of New York (SUNY) Central Administration and campus offices, committees, and other organizational units that formulate and implement the State University of New York's policies and programs. These records consist primarily of files containing incoming and outgoing correspondence with the Chancellor's Office, reports, memorandums, newspaper clippings, meeting agendas and minutes, and strategic planning and progress reports on a variety of commissions implemented by SUNY Central Administration. Also included are files on the development of SUNY master plans. The records discuss the scope and evolution of SUNY's educational and research activities. Additionally, records document the administrative, legal, and fiscal rights and obligations of the SUNY system and its faculty and students. Significant topics include equal employment opportunities, the financing of higher education, and student exchange programs.
Chancellors represented include: C. Eurich (1949-1952), Charles Garside (1952), William S. Carlson (1952-1958), Thomas H. Hamilton (1959-1963), J. Lawrence Murray (1963-1964), Samuel B. Gould (1964-1970), Ernest L. Boyer (1970-1977), James F. Kelly (1977-1978), Clifton R. Wharton, Jr. (1978-1987), Jerome B. Komisar (1987-1988), D. Bruce Johnstone (1988-1994), Joseph C. Burke (1994), Thomas A. Bartlett (1994-1996), and John W. Ryan (1997-1999).
Among the organizations included in this series are African-American Institute, Empire State Youth Theatre Institute, the New York State Education Department, and the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government. A number of colleges and universities are also represented in this series.
