Scope and Content Note
This series consists of rolled mylar, linen, and paper topographic maps created by the Department of Transportation and its predecessor agency, the Department of Public Works, for use in the planning and preliminary design of highway projects. The black and white maps were generally produced on 30" x 54" sheets using photogrammetry. The maps were produced using a 1"=200' scale, with individual sheets generally covering an area of approximately two square miles. Geographic coverage is limited to narrow corridors along state highways that were often built after the production of the maps depicting these corridors.
Among the features shown on most of the maps are: all roads, with identifying route numbers and names; railroads; airports; transmission lines; individual buildings; hydrography; civil boundaries; fence lines; and, in some cases, property lines with property owners' names. Contours, with a five feet contour interval, are shown on all maps. The State Plane Coordinate System usually is shown on the maps. Projects designed or planned with the aid of these maps generally are not depicted.

Other Finding Aids
A bound list of photogrammetric contracts is available for use onsite.
Four index maps covering the northern, southern, central, and western sections of the state function as a finding aid for the series. Individual map sheet numbers are indicated on the index maps, along with the approximate limits of coverage of each corresponding topographic map. An index number is assigned to groups of map sheets. At the bottom of each index map, there is a conversion list indicating the contract or project identification number (PIN) corresponding to each index number. That contract or PIN number is used to locate groups of maps, which are arranged therein by map sheet number.
Custodial History
In February 2002 the NYSDOT Map Information Unit was discontinued, and its staff and services transferred to the NYS Office for Technology. At that time older, non-current but archival copies of various series of maps were transferred to the State Archives. This series, as well as series B1806 (Urban area maps) and series B1807 (Village/ hamlet atlases) were accessioned under RDA 20986.
