Scope and Content Note
Books of general entries contain the office copies of documents issued by colonial governors Richard Nicolls, Francis Lovelace, and Sir Edmund Andros. They reveal the governors' efforts to enact the policies of the British monarchy, and provide insight into seventeenth century society, commerce, industry, agriculture, law, and land development. Documents include orders, warrants, instructions, and letters to local officials, as well as letters hue and cry, travel passes, commercial licenses, marriage licenses, and land records.

One roll of microfilm produced by the New York State Archives in 1987 includes the entire extant series, volumes 1-4; a second roll of microfilm orginally produced by the New York State Library as A-FM 178 includes only volumes 2-3. Documents included on both rolls should be compared for legibility.

Processing Information
Microfilm produced by the New York State Library as A-FM 178 (includes only volumes 2-3) was originally accessioned as State Archives Series B1874. Upon later comparison, the microfilm was confirmed to contain records that are part of Series A3169 and was added to this series.
Access Restrictions
Access to original records is restricted due to moderate to severe burn damage. Microfilm is considered first use copy.
