Administrative History
In January of 1974, the Native American Education Unit was created to consolidate programs and functions involving the education of Native Americans in New York State from numerous NYSED divisions and offices. Among other activities, the unit provides guidance to local school districts receiving federal Title IV and Johnson-O'Malley Act funds, allocates state aid programs to local school districts educating Native Americans residing on reservations, and administers the New York State Indian Aid program which provides financial aid for Native American students attending postsecondary schools.
Scope and Content Note
This subseries contains files documenting the Native American Education Unit's provision of reimbursements to New York State school districts for expenses related to the education of students from Indian reservations in district schools. These documents include state aid voucher forms, listing the number of Indian students in the school district at each school level (kindergarten, elementary, secondary, and handicapped), along with the tuition rates for each type of student. Also included are lists of students eligible to be counted for reimbursement, correspondence showing recalculations of tuition rates and amounts districts were underpaid or overpaid in their reimbursements, worksheets for determining per-student tuition rates, and copies of contracts between NYSED and school districts for the education of Native American students.
