This series consists of state and county highway maps showing completed, improved, and proposed roads. Most are official published county highway maps, annotated to show state and county highway systems corrected to 1936. Also included are publications and correspondence on special highway projects in New York City, dating from the 1940s and early 1950s, and a number of World War II maps indicating military priority highways.

The maps show boundaries of state-owned lands along the Erie, Champlain, Black River, Cayuga, and Seneca Canals and depict old and new canal lines; structures, streets and adjacent roads; and state and privately owned land. Each portfolio includes full titles. The maps depict in minute detail lands acquired for canal purposes.

This series contains maps of land to be appropriated by state agencies for building sites (state hospitals, colleges, and armories) and for construction of the Troy-Menands Bridge. Maps include full descriptions including map and parcel numbers, reputed owners, and acreage. Also included are several incorporation maps, maps of extended boundaries annexed to villages, and plot maps of unappropriated county lands.

This series, known as the "blue line maps," depicts lands acquired for canal purposes up to and including the construction of the Barge Canal. The maps show inner angles of the towpaths on the old canal; state owned property prior to Barge Canal construction; property appropriated for Barge Canal projects; various structures, roads, streets, and other landmarks; and the names of owners of private property adjacent to the canal.
