- These files include correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, clippings, legislative bills, and photographs concerning the participation of New York State residents in World War I. Also included are war histories from other states. The files were collected by State Historian, James Sullivan, in response to a 1919 resolution of the Senate and Assembly authorizing him to "collect, collate, compile, edit and prepare for publication sufficient materials, statistics and data for a history of the State of New York in the war.

- The series consists of a small quantity of correspondence, reports, rosters of commissioned officers, provision returns, special and general orders, reports, morning reports and related records concerning the Independent Corps, Light Infantry. The regiment, which was also known as the "Enfants Perdu" or "Lost Children," was initially mustered into federal service in 1862. The unit disbanded in 1864 when the enlisted men transferred to several regiments.

Often listed are engagements fought in, date killed, and burial place.

Most of these documents deal with Company B of Regiment 2 of the Militia Volunteers. Contained within the series is one pre-war letter (1856) written from Joseph B. Hazen, who later served as a captain with Company B, to his father.

The series also contains a small amount of material concerning Gibson's command of the 30th New York State National Guard between 1862 and 1865.

- This series includes records of payments of readjustment allowances to unemployed veterans who served in World War II and the Korean War. These payments were authorized for up to fifty-two weeks by the Federal Readjustments Act of 1944 and subsequent state and federal laws. Each card includes veteran's name, military service number, address, and weekly payments made. These cards are used to verify military service of individuals for whom other records are lacking.
