Summary
- This series consists of field notes from surveys made for the Canal Commissioners (Revised Statutes 1827), which directed that the Commissioners have maps and field notes made for all canals constructed by the state. Field notes in this series were submitted by the Canal Commissioners to the Canal Board for approval, and upon approval were certified by the commissioners and filed in the Comptroller's Office. The Erie, Chenango, Chemung, Crooked Lake, Cayuga and Seneca, and Oswego canals are covered.

- The series consists of 34 field books created by James Frost as he surveyed lands for individuals to help settle disputes over property boundaries or for appraisal. Frost was also hired by New York State for similar purposes where he worked under the direction of the State Surveyor General. These volumes contain survey notes and topographical sketches and provide information on the reason the survey was conducted, who requested it; survey location; date; and names of any assistants to Frost.

- The series consists of field books, notes, maps, and deeds relating to the Holland Land Company's lands in the western part of New York State. - This series consists of field books created by Verplanck Colvin during his survey of the Adirondack region. The volumes are made up predominantly of survey notes and sketches. Many also contain additional notes, topographical sketches, and letters. Indexes, legends, and conversion tables are also frequently found. Series includes a distinct subset known as the "T" volumes that consist of surveys conducted using a theodolite survey instrument.

- This series consists of ten field books documenting surveys for proposed state roads. Two of the field books contain data on a state road from Lake Erie to the Hudson River that was proposed and surveyed, but never built. It is unknown whether the other field books refer to any roads that were actually built. The notes very occasionally include brief descriptions of soil conditions, terrain, and establishments on route.

- This series compiled by the State Engineer and Surveyor documents the appraisal, surveying, purchase, and sale of lands within the state. Many records deal with boundary lines between New York State and the neighboring states and between various towns within the state.

- This series consists of copies of a dependent re-survey of portions of the boundary of the Allegany Indian Reservation and portions of the village lines within the reservation at Cattauragus County, New York. Included are two copies of a survey map and a forty-four page duplicate copy of associated field notes. The city of Salamanca is located on land leased from the Indians. These records probably relate to a dispute which occurred when the long-term lease of that property ended.

- The Onondaga Indian Reservation was established by treaty between the Onondaga Indians and the State of New York in 1788. After various tracts were sold by the Onondagas, they petitioned the state for a re-survey of their reservation. This series consists of field notes of a United State Department of the Interior survey of the Onondaga Indian Reservation executed in 1938 to restore and remark the boundaries of the reservation established by an earlier re-survey executed in 1856.
