This series consists mostly of correspondence received by John M. Clarke, paleontologist and geologist while employed by the State Museum. Also included are a few letters to James Hall; letters received by "Professor Rupert Jones"; and notes and maps of amateur paleontologist Olof O. This series consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, notes, reports, surveys, well logs, and maps mostly relating to oil and natural gas location and production in New York State. Most of the files were created by two Geological Survey geologists whose specialties were "economic geology." Included is information on the identification and location of oil and natural gas fields; commercial development; assessments and production. The records also document the dissemination of information to oil and natural gas firms, other scientists, and landowners.
