Summary
This series consists of two almost identical versions of a published geological chart and a small accompanying published key prepared by James Hall entitled ''A chart giving an ideal section of successive geological formations with an actual geological section, from the Atlantic, to the Pacific Ocean." The lower half of the chart depicts geological sections, some hand colored and annotated, illustrating the stratigraphy of specific areas. Elaborate representations of characteristic fossils of each formation are depicted on the top portion.

The index is incomplete and should be used with caution.

This series contains correspondence files of the Director of the State Museum, State Geologist, and State Paleontologist with such entities as scientists within and without New York State, museums and institutions of science or higher learning, the Board of Regents, private citizens, the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.), and Museum staff. Until 1925, the Director also held the position of State Geologist. Until 1894 and from 1904 to 1925, he also served as State Paleontologist.

This series consists of vouchers submitted by employees of the New York State Geological and Natural History Survey for payment of services rendered; supplies purchased; transportation and equipment costs. Also included are a few receipts, drafts for payment, abstracts of expenses, and a letter by Governor W. L. Marcy explaining special pay arrangements for geologist W. W. Mathers and vouchers and comptroller's warrants to pay the salaries and expenses of the State Geological Survey and the State Agricultural Survey.

Summary
The memorial album contains diplomas, honorary degrees, and certificates of election to scientific and natural history societies awarded to James Hall former director of in the State Museum. Included are the Governor's proclamation designating Hall as State Geologist and Paleontologist indefinitely (1893) and a resolution of the State Assembly absolving Hall of all charges against his integrity (1896).
