These files include correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, clippings, legislative bills, and photographs concerning the participation of New York State residents in World War I. Also included are war histories from other states. The files were collected by State Historian, James Sullivan, in response to a 1919 resolution of the Senate and Assembly authorizing him to "collect, collate, compile, edit and prepare for publication sufficient materials, statistics and data for a history of the State of New York in the war.

Summary
This series contains personal information, service data, newspaper clippings, and photographs of New York State veterans of World War I. Some accounts of home front activities in the state are also included. The series contains a small amount of material documenting the manner in which the State Education Department, the state's schools, faculty, and students contributed to the war effort.

This series consists of memoranda, letters, and resolutions sent to county home defense committees from the New York State Defense Council, and also correspondence from the various committees sent to the Council reporting on their organizing and program efforts. Topics include: assuring a workable system of transportation; monitoring food production and conservation; enrolling men for home defense; providing needed labor for defense industries; and supervising instruction in personal hygiene, first aid, and economy in the home.

Summary
With the declaration of World War I, the State Department of Health placed its organization and resources at the disposal of the New York State Defense Council and the Adjutant General's Office. This series consists of correspondence, memoranda, lists and reports, census data, and some bulletins and newspaper clippings on work undertaken by the Council to inventory and apply the state's medical resources to aid troop mobilization and the casualties of war.
