This series consists of two bound volumes compiled by Medical agents assigned to the Washington office of the New York Military Agency. The registers date between February, 1865 and September, 1866. Volume one relates mainly to the processing of soldiers' claims for back pay, invalid pensions, or other monetary concerns. Volume two records claims of soldiers in hospitals applying for discharges, transfers, or furloughs.

This series consists mainly of incoming correspondence directed to Brigadier General Isaac Vanderpoel, Engineer in Chief and Acting Assistant Adjutant-General. The bulk of the correspondence deals with the enrollment of men into the State's National Guard. The majority of the records pertain to routine administrative matters such as requests for enrollment books; appointments of enrolling officers; transmission of enrollment records and lists of names of enrolling officers for regimental districts; and questions concerning specific enrollment procedures.

Enrollment lists for the 14th District, New York State

Summary

This series consists of printed lists (on rag paper) of men enrolled, and therefore liable to military duty, residing in the 14th Enrollment District of the State, apparently comprising Albany and Schoharie counties. The lists provide the names of all men between the ages of twenty and forty-five who were subject to the draft. The lists consist of two parts: the lists of names, and a prefatory statement at the top of each list.

Summary

This series consists of a small quantity of resignations, submitted by officers resigning their commissions, forwarded to the Adjutant General's Office. The resignation will normally provide the name of the individual resigning, rank, regiment, date, and reason for resignation. The remainder of the series consists of a varied collection of vouchers and receipts which pertain mainly to expenditures incurred by National Guard units after the Civil War.

National Guard muster rolls

Summary

This series consists of muster rolls for each division and brigade in the New York National Guard, as well as all organizations in the New York Naval Militia. Information provided generally includes: name; rank; whether present or absent at annual muster; date of rank; date and rank of original entry into service; and remarks on any change in status. Each roll also lists names of men gained or lost since the last annual muster, by discharge, promotion, expulsion, transfer, removal, desertion, or death. NOTE: Only Naval Militia muster rolls are available for the period 1942-1954.

This series consists of a company muster roll and payroll. Muster roll portion gives company and regimental commanding officers, a listing of names and ranks of individuals present and absent, notes of where and by whom individuals were enrolled in service, some individual details as to whereabouts and conditions (such as wounded), reasons for absences, and notes of those assigned to other units. Payroll portion lists last pay amounts due, amounts withheld, and balances.

In 1863, the State Legislature mandated that the Bureau of Military Statistics collect and preserve an "authentic sketch of every person from this State who has volunteered into the service of the general government" since April 15, 1861. The six volumes that comprise this series were compiled in partial fullment of that directive. The volumes contain both military and civil information on New York men mustered into federal military or naval service during the Civil War.

This volume records names of United States Colored Troops who filed claims against the United States for back pay and bounties for services during the Civil War. Each entry provides the following information: claim number; name; rank; company; regiment; date of enlistment; date discharged; and date claim was filed. Some entries provide the authorization by which the claimant was discharged and a notation whether the claim was settled or rejected. If the claim was settled, the amount is usually provided.

These certificates, sometimes referred to as "Pierce's Certificates," were issued by U.S. Paymaster General John Pierce pursuant to a resolution of the Continental Congress adopted on July 4, 1783. They were issued to Continental Army soldiers and officers owed pay for service during the Revolution. This list gives voucher number; certificate number; name of recipient; date issued; principal amount of certificate; date interest began to accrue; and total amount of principal per voucher.

This series consists of records relating to the Civil War service of Company H of the 65th Regiment New York State Volunteers. Included is a description book providing physical descriptions and enlistment data, and a clothing book documenting distribution date(s) and money value of clothing distributed to the men of Company H. Few members of the company are listed and most entries are incomplete. Also include is a summary account of clothing issues to the various companies of the regiment, and a quartermaster list for stores received from United States. Records are restricted due to fragility.

These abstracts were compiled from original muster rolls of New York State Militia units that were temporarily mustered into federal service during the Civil War. Thirty eight of the sixty-five militia organizations that served in the Civil War are documented in this series. The abstracts contain the following categories of information for each individual: date of enlistment; age (in years); place of enlistment and for how long; date mustered in; grade; explanation; and remarks.

It also contains a list of claims filed in response to the Revolution Claims Act of February 3, 1853 (U.S. 10 Stat. 154) for eight New York counties.

This series consists of abstracts for New York men who served in the Veteran Reserve Corps (originally the Invalid Corps), an organization of men unfit for regular duty but who were healthy enough for prison guard, hospital, and military police duties. Abstracts include: name; date, place, and length of enlistment; age; date mustered in; grade; company and regiment; how, when, and in what grade the individual left the organization and "remarks," (typically the soldier's prior military service).
