This information was compiled after a fire in the State Capitol destroyed many school district records in 1911. Not all union free schools established before 1911 are included.

Documents include orders of the commissioner of education and district superintendents; petitions for school district meetings; and minutes of organizing meetings of school districts. Common school and union free school district legal files were destroyed in the 1911 State Capitol building fire.
