- This series consists of lists of private and taxable state lands in Forest Preserve counties on which 1912 property taxes remained unpaid, and for which either the property description or the assessed tax were rejected as improper. Each entry provides the name of the tract or patent, lot number, description of the parcel on which taxes were owed, acreage, assessed valuation, amount of tax due, and 5 percent fee. The reasons for rejection are stated in the margin.

- This series consists of tax assessment rolls prepared by town tax assessors and certified as accurate copies by the county treasurer. Each entry on the tax roll states name of taxpayer, brief description of parcel, acreage, assessed valuation, and amount of taxes. These tax assessment rolls were evidently used as exhibits in a hearing (or hearings) before the Comptroller. The exact nature of the hearing is unknown.

- Land was sold when taxes were unpaid for two years. If the owner paid the taxes within one year after the land was sold for taxes, it reverted to that person's ownership. This series consists of documents relating to sale and redemption of land on which taxes were owed, mostly in the Forest Preserve. Documents include tax searches, tax sale deeds, lists of lands on which taxes were unpaid or sold for unpaid taxes, affidavits, opinions, and legal briefs.

Summary
- This series consists of draft or executed deeds for lands sold for unpaid taxes and not redeemed. Deeds cite specific laws authorizing tax sales but are otherwise in the standard form of a deed. A law of 1823 provided that when land taxes were unpaid for a period of two years the land would be sold. If the owner paid the taxes within one year after the sale, it reverted back to that person's ownership.

Summary
- The Comptroller was responsible for selling land for payment of delinquent taxes. These records were apparently used in conducting tax searches for various individual title companies and lawyers. Each letters lists any taxes and tax sales and associated dates for the specific plot of land for which the request was submitted. Tax records that these letters relate to are readily apparent in State Archives holdings.
