Mortgages to the state were required to be registered in the Secretary of State's office. This series contains mortgages primarily for lands sold by the state in patents and former Indian reservations. Information includes mortgagor, property description and mortgage terms. Many mortgages were discharged or cancelled. A certificate of payment and cancellation was entered in the margin. Discharges are mostly for lots in the East and West Cayuga Reservations.

Series also includes applications for and copies of academy charters granted by the Board of Regents, 1788-1855, and notices of discovery of gold and silver mines, 1789-1839.

This series compiled by the State Engineer and Surveyor documents the appraisal, surveying, purchase, and sale of lands within the state. Records include land tract sales, land appraisals, surveys and descriptions of tracts, reports (such as land boundaries and state canals); correspondence (including about oyster lands), field notes and maps, leases and court records. Many records deal with boundary lines between New York State and the neighboring states and between various towns within the state.

This series of 5 x 8 inch cards indexes Series B2643, Lands under water survey project records. The index cards provide the name of applicant, survey location, county, tube number, and 222 series number. Some index cards also include project date. The cards also provide an "H" series number, which is the designation for highway/Department of Public Works projects. The last set of numbers in the "H" series number correlate to the project survey file number in Series B2643.

This series consists of lands under water survey project records, which resulted from surveys conducted on behalf of applicants for lands under water transactions. The records also include some documentation of transfer of jurisdiction to other state agencies. Documented projects were located in the five boroughs of New York City and Long Island as well as Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange, and Greene counties. Typed of records include survey receipts, payroll logs, survey descriptions, phone message slips, survey calculations, copies of adjacent upland deeds, newspaper articles, and survey maps.

This series contains information about vacant land owned by the State of New York in Clinton County. The records were compiled pursuant to Chapter 711 of the Laws of 1893, which allowed the Comptroller to advertise a list of the wild, vacant, and forest lands for which the State held title. The Comptroller's notice as to ownership lists towns, lot numbers, a brief description of the land, and the number of acres.

This series consists of releases of right and claim to property by individuals to the State of New York. Almost all of the releases convey real property to the state. Releases are for lands erroneously granted by letters patent; purchased by the state for public buildings; seized during the Revolutionary War; and or redeemed for delinquent taxes. Each release lists the name of the releasor, date of release, and date of filing in the Secretary of State's Office.
