- This volume records names of United States Colored Troops who filed claims against the United States for back pay and bounties for services during the Civil War. Each entry provides the following information: claim number; name; rank; company; regiment; date of enlistment; date discharged; and date claim was filed. Some entries provide the authorization by which the claimant was discharged and a notation whether the claim was settled or rejected. If the claim was settled, the amount is usually provided.

Tompkins and William L. Marcy. A significant amount of correspondence covers Governor Tompkins's effort to mobilize state resources at the beginning of the War of 1812 and the state's effort in 1846 to organize volunteers to fight in the Mexican War.

- The majority of these records are comprised of contracts and correspondence relating to the purchase and repair of military equipment such as weapons and ammunition for use by the state militia. These account listings track the existing and expected stores of such equipment. Accounts largely pertain to the War of 1812 and its aftermath. Later records include assessments of fines on militia units and individuals serving in them, as well as citations of sheriffs.

- These two volumes describe New York State Militia units by location during the 1840s and 1850s. It is likely that a portion of the series was generated in response to Chapter 270 of the Laws of 1846, which stipulated that all able-bodied white male citizens between the ages of eighteen and forty-five in the state be enrolled in the militia by the commanding officer of the company district in which they resided.
