These photographs depict public custodial facilities in New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They include: exterior building views; interior building views; facility grounds; institutional residents; and institutional staff. The photographs appear to have been gathered for a report on treatment of the mentally ill in other states, which was prepared by the New York State Commissioner in Lunacy.

These undated black-and-white photographs and negatives depict Long Island state mental hospital facilities, buildings, staff, and patients. The hospitals shown are Pilgrim State Hospital, Central Islip State Hospital, and Kings Park State Hospital.

This series, consisting of subject files from several sources within the Department of Mental Hygiene, was assembled by author Leo Polaski. The files relate to various topics and pertain to the mental health facilities of Kings Park State Hospital, Pilgrim State Hospital, and Central Islip State Hospital. Types of records include newspaper clippings, circular letters, nursing school yearbooks, articles, reports, and manuals.

This accretion documents the admission, legal status, assessment, treatment, and discharge of patients of Buffalo State Hospital (later Buffalo Psychiatric Center). Casebooks (Boxes 1-22) contain bound records pertaining to the admission and treatment of patients during the period from 1881 to 1898 (patient case file numbers 151 to 6449). Records which cover the period 1899-1920 (boxes 23-99) consist solely of medical records pertaining to patient care at the facility. These records include patient case file numbers 6456 to 16389. Black and white photographs of patients are included in later case files.
