This series consists of index cards created by the Real Estate Division of the Department of Transportation to facilitate access to permits for the use and occupancy of New York State canal lands (Series B1790). Permits were typically granted to private citizens to build camps or boat docks on canal property; to municipalities to build bridges or other infrastructures; and to private companies to construct gas or other pipelines across or along canal right of way.

This series consists of inactive revocable permits for the temporary use of canal lands and waters filed with the Waterways Maintenance Division and its predecessor agencies. Uses approved by permits include agriculture, beautification, boating docks, marinas, pipelines, railroads, spoil, recreation transmission lines, and water supplies.

Insurance permits also contain insurance policy or certificate of insurance numbers for the land or property described by the permit.
