Brief daily entries typically mention weather conditions; farm work in progress; maintenance and repair work in progress; entertainment provided to children; team sporting events; incidents pertaining to specific children; religious activities; correspondence sent by superintendent; and trips by superintendent and staff. Diaries are institutional in nature and therefore do not contain superintendents' personal opinions or observations regarding non-work related events.

- The Special Schools Bureau supervised Indian schools on reservations, schools for the blind and deaf, schools for adults in prison, and the New York State Nautical School. This series consists of correspondence, memorandums, reports, legislation, newspaper clippings, and samples of students' work. Topics which vary between types of special schools include conditions at schools, attendance, schedules and activities, hiring and conduct of teachers, and lists of students.

- This series consists of statistical reports for farm and/or garden products raised at the Thomas Indian School. The school furnished the children with care, moral training, education and "instruction in husbandry." Separate monthly reports for each product gave a daily account of quantity produced and its disposition. Reports also indicate the market value of produce. Examples of products include: milk, chicken,; pork, eggs, tomatoes, onions, apples, grapes, oats, and corn silage.

Included are curriculum proposals, lesson plans, budget files, contracts, reports, bulletins, and newsletters generated by the Unit, New York Indian schools, experts in Native American education, and the State Education Department. A significant portion of the records document the administration of Title IV of the federal Education Amendments of 1972. Files highlight issues affecting Native American education at both the state and national levels.

- This series consists of records that document the development of a 1975 Regents position paper on Native American Indian Education. The records include correspondence, press releases, reports, hearings transcripts, the history of Indian Education in New York State, statements and transcripts from the Conference on Indian Education, and 300 survey forms that solicited Indian parents' views and attitudes toward education. Also present is correspondence showing the interaction between state and federal governments regarding the formulation of education policy.
